It was a bright and sunny day in Poolesville when Eco Evie woke up. She headed to the bathroom to brush her teeth, but left the water on. Sister bear walked through the door, saw Eco Evie brushing her teeth, and noticed the faucet running.

At the pool Eco Evie and her friends got hungry and decided to go to the snack bar. Samantha Snake stood in line ahead of them, and ordered a water. When it was their turn they ordered nachos, and went to find a picnic table to eat at.
When they finished, Eco Evie threw away her trash, and headed back to the pool. As she passed the snack bar, she noticed an empty water bottle on the ground. She realized that Samantha Snake had thrown her bottle on the ground, but the bottle was not hers, so she kept walking.

After she got back from the pool, Eco Evie decided to go on a walk with her dog. She grabbed the leash, and went to the kitchen to get a water bottle. She looked in the garage but didn’t see any!
“Mom! Why don’t we have any water bottles?” She asked.

“Eco Evie! That’s wasting water! Turn off the faucet when you are brushing your teeth to save water!”
“Oh! I never thought of that!” Eco Evie exclaimed, and she quickly turned off the faucet.

“Eco Evie! You can put that peel in the composting bin to reduce waste, and we can use it later to help our garden!”
“Oh yeah!” She exclaimed, and she took the peel out of the trash, and put it in the composting bin.

“Eco Evie! Don’t use a plastic bag for your sandwich! Put it in a reusable container! Plastic is not biodegradable, so it does not break down, and hurts our ocean animal friends!”
“OK! Thanks for the reminder!” She said with a smile, and put down the plastic bag. Riley Raccoon handed her a container, and they headed out the door.

“Eco Evie!” Stephanie Squirrel shouted.
“You should bike to the pool with us instead of driving! Cars pollute the air by releasing smoke that makes it dirty and hard to breathe in! We also save gas by biking!”
“That sounds like a great idea!” Eco Evie grabbed her helmet and joined her friends.

Charlie Chipmunk, the snack bar operator, saw her step over it and called out,“Eco Evie! Can you pick up that water bottle please? I know it isn’t yours but as soon as you see it, it is your responsibility to pick it up!”
“Oh OK, I’m sorry” Eco Evie said, and picked up the water bottle.
“Don’t apologize, you didn’t know! Make sure you recycle it though! If you throw it away it will end up in a landfill somewhere, and will release harmful gases. Recycling helps to reduce the amount of trash that ends up in those landfills.”
“OK!” Eco Evie said, and she did just that.
Fifth Grade MES ~ Center Template:
“Because I didn’t buy any! Plastic water bottles are bad for the environment, so I bought us some reusable ones instead! They are in the pantry.” Mama Bear explained.
“Ok!” Eco Evie called back, and she picked up a reusable bottle and filled it. She then called to her dog, and they left the house for their walk.

Eco Evie walked to Halmos park. About halfway through their walk they stopped, and her dog went to the bathroom. When she was finished, they kept walking until she heard a voice call to her.
“Eco Evie!” She turned, and found Francesca Fox running up the path behind her. “You should pick up that dog poop! When it rains it will get washed into the drains and into our watershed, contaminating the water!”
“But I don’t have a bag.” Eco Evie responded.
6th Grade JPMS ~ Center Template:
“That’s OK! You can get one from the dog poop station!” Francesca Fox turned and reaches up to a sign Eco Evie hadn’t seen, and pulled out a plastic bag. She handed it to Eco Evie.
“Thanks!” Eco Evie said as she leaned down and picked up the poop. She then turned and threw the bag into the trash can.
She waved good-bye to Francesca Fox and continued walking.

That night while Papa Bear and Eco Evie were getting ready for bed, Eco Evie commented on how hot it was, and asked him to turn on the air conditioner.
“Running the air conditioner all night takes a lot of energy! Can you think of another way we can keep cool without using so much energy?” he asked.

Eco Evie thought about it for a second.
“We could open the windows!”she exclaimed. “It’s cool at night and it isn’t supposed to rain!”

As Eco Evie lay in bed a few minutes later, she reflected on the day she had. She learned so many easy ways to help the environment!
Each thing she had done was small, but when put together, they made a big difference! Imagine what would happen if everyone did small things to help the environment!
